The wardrobe could often be one of the largest pieces of furniture in the bedroom and thus – more difficult to move. But – nothing to worry about, you have come to the right place to solve this question. Here are the tips that you need to know on how to move a wardrobe on your own, starting from getting the packing materials that you need up to arranging the items in your wardrobe in your new home, after the relocation.
How to Move a Wardrobe
Wardrobes could be large and heavy, which makes them more difficult to move but with the right preparation and information this task is absolutely achievable. Whether you want to move your big wardrobe yourself or you will be looking for help, here are some interesting, useful and very simple ideas which will make your wardrobe relocation more efficient and affordable.
Make a plan about where you will start, what you will need and what order of work you will follow for the move of your wardrobe. Begin with collecting wardrobe moving supplies that you will need – trolley/ dolly, moving boxes, moving blankets, bubble wrap and foam (for glass), straps, wardrobe boxes, possibly tools for disassembly (see explanations further below), cardboard boxes, permanent marker, tape and scissors. You will need those for the packing and for the process of the move itself. After that, open all the doors of your wardrobe and explore which items won’t be moved. If for some reason there are such things (may be they are worn out, out of fashion, etc.), just put them away, you can decide what to do with them later. The rest of the items should begin to go into boxes as soon as possible. Clothes that are from a different season and generally things that you won’t need until after the move should be packed first. You can use wardrobe boxes for clothes in hangers – it’s much faster and easier to just transfer hangers between the wardrobe and the boxes rather than take each piece of clothing away from the hanger, fold it, place it in a cardboard box, pack the hangers separately, then, in your new home, take out of the box each piece of clothing one by one and fix it on the hangers again. Wouldn’t you agree? Additionally, we have a guide for packing shoes, if you want more info on this topic. Sign the boxes with the marker on top and all for sides and tape them.
After the whole wardrobe’s content is fully packed, it is time to take care of the move itself. Any items in the wardrobe that are not secured should be removed like shelves as they could shift inside, break and cause damages to the wardrobe. You can secure drawers in place and definitely secure doors as they could open or move when the wardrobe is on the road. Wrap with moving blankets the wardrobe. If the wardrobe has a mirror or glass, remove it and wrap it in bubble wrap and then foam for maximum protection. Use straps and/ or moving tape to secure well the wardrobe packing. But how to move a big wardrobe? If this is your case, use a trolley or a dolly. If it is too big, you may have to take it apart. In this case, it would be good for you to be aware in advance of the way to dismantle your wardrobe. Plan in advance how and where you will move it, will it pass through the doorways, hallways, etc. or will you have to put it in parts. Either way, if you work out these details in advance, the move itself will feel like a piece of cake to you. Make sure you have the correct measures of your new home and you have planned where to put your wardrobe. There is no point in spending time and money to move it, just to find out that there is no space for it in the room. That is another question for you to consider.
Of course, moving a heavy wardrobe is not easy. The best way to do it is to contact professionals – they have experience in this task and have performed such work lots of times, unlike you. Get a quote from movers – collect at least several estimates to compare. Using moving help is something that will not only guarantee the safety of the move and the preservation of your furniture, but it will also not allow your health to be exposed to moving risks. It is certainly easier and safer for you to watch someone do such a tedious work instead of you. And one more thing – don’t forget that moving companies will do this job much faster than you would, which, again is a great advantage.
