Moving with kids
Moving with kids is much more complicated than moving just by yourself. You have to prepare for the moving process, but also to make sure that your child wouldn’t get depressed.
There are a few very helpful tips that could help you reduce the stress on your child before and after the move. Make your family move exciting and pleasurable experience for your children.
Before moving tips
- Tell your kids about the move as soon as possible. Kids need time to get used to the idea of moving, so be sure to tell them as soon as possible. The chance to get angry at you because they have to move is much smaller. Prepare your kids in advance. Give them the chance to adjust with the whole new situation.
- Involve your kids in the move planning. This is one of the best way to keep them distracted from thinking that they are leaving their friends or to get depressed about their new school. Moving is a family event, so you should make them a part of it. You can even take them for the house hunting with you.
- Answer all of your kids questions about the move. Even if you can’t answer all of their questions you will have an idea about how are they feeling about moving. Try to assure your children that everything will be fine. Tell them about all the new opportunities they will have in the new place.
- Take your kids to see their new house or neighborhood. Week or two before the move take your kids to visit their new house or apartment. They will feel much more relaxed when they arrived there. Try to make the new place look more friendly. Let them know the new neighborhood before moving.
After the move tips
- Help your kids decorate their own room. This is perfect way to make your kids feel more comfortable about the new house. A cozier home will make your kids adjust much more easily. Let them feel at home. Engage children with a little housework. Make it look like more funny.
- Accompany your kids to school. Going to a new school is a great challenge for your kids, so consider it as a good idea to accompany them to their new school at least for the fist several weeks. Beware that your children will need more attention at the beginning.
- Take a break when you are done with the major unpacking. Take your family to a nice vacation as soon you are done with the unpacking. Do try to do everything at once. Give your kids time to adapt to the new environment.
Finally, encourage your kids to exchange addresses with their new friends, call or write to relatives about their new home. Making new friends is essential step in the whole adjusting period.
