Don’t risk the life of your beloved golden fishes or exotic fishes. Learn how to move your aquarium safe and easy in just few simple steps. Here is the complete aquarium moving guide:.

Most moving companies will give you some tips about moving an aquarium, but to make sure that everything is handled perfect, you need to make the moving by yourself or supervise the moving process.. After all it’s your fishes that you need to worry about.

So let’s start with the fish moving tips. Fishes are extremely pretentious animals and very sensible when it comes to moving, especially moving long distance. Even in the most comfy car, there is a great chance to loose some. Some exotic kinds just can’t take the long distance. Sometimes it’s just better to give your fishes to your neighbor.

Do, not try to move the tank when the fishes are inside, that is a bad decision. What you should do first is to take the fish out of the tank into a smaller transportation devise filled with water. You should empty the fish tank before transportation.

Moving the Fish Tank

The main problem when moving your aquarium will be the filtration system. After a short period of time, sometimes just few hours (less than a day) without a flow of oxygen-laden water, aerobic bacteria start to die. This means that if you are moving short distance (an hour drive or so), it may be possible to preserve your bacteria colony. This leads to the following process:

Put your fish into a holding container. (I will explain more about this below).

Empty your aquarium. If the move is going to be really short, then keep some of the water inside. That way you will keep the bacteria.

Disassemble your tank. Aquarium plants will survive a fair amount of time if their roots are kept wet, so it should be possible to bag them with some water and set them aside for hand-moving.

Move your tank. Don’t use a moving company unless you are sure that they are really experienced and have the knowledge how to do that.

Reassemble your tank at your destination.

Where to Put the Fishes while Moving

You should transport the fish separately while your tank is being transported. There are three basic options:

A friend’s tank (the best choice).

A pet store tank.

Temporary holding container.

Tips for transporting the fishes

For short periods of time (a couple of hours, tops) you can put the fish in sealed bags, half-filled with air. Fishes are basically too stressed during the move, so don’t try to feed them, you will only make the water dirty.

Moving aquariums and fish is not an easy task. The moving companies are usually not qualified to handle a task like that. If you decide to let the movers handle the move, find a moving company that has experience with this kind of relocation services.

The key to a successful move when moving something heavy is to use your brain rather than your muscles. The first thing that you should do is to ensure that all heavy items can fit through openings and around corners of your home. If you think that some item is too big to fit through some door, then you should disassemble that particular item to avoid any scratches on your door or the floor (especially if it is a hardwood floor).

Then think carefully how you can move the heavy items with the least strain. Once you decide on a strategy, call some friends to help you with the move. The most important thing is to be patient, don’t rush to finish in an hour, move your items carefully. That way you will be able to prevent injuries both to you and your belongings. If necessary, find more helpers.

Packing Heavy Items before Moving

When you are moving heavy items you should always try to make your items lighter by removing all of its contents. It’s just silly to move your bureau when there are numerous books in it. Make sure you remove all the inside shelves if you are moving a heavy entertainment center or a big dresser. That way you will make it liter and you will prevent damages that might occur once you rotate the furniture around to fit the doors.

Packing heavy items before moving is essential especially if you are moving wooden furniture. That way you will preserve the furniture from scratching and also you will prevent damages and stains to the walls. Use furniture pads or blankets and tape them around the piece of furniture. Make sure the blankets are carefully taped so the furniture piece is easy to grab and move.

Some Effective Tips for Moving Heavy Items

Remember, pushing is a lot easier and more effective than pulling. So if some item is too heavy to be lifted, then you and your moving helpers should push that item, not pull it. Don’t forget however that when pushing something across the floor you should put old newspapers or blankets under it. You don’t want to damage your floor. To move a heavy item, like a refrigerator, you should get behind it, lean it towards you, and then you could walk it slowly from side to side.

Moving Heavy Furniture

To move your couch or anything else with legs, you should lay it on its back or side and slide it as much as you can. Sometimes you should remove the legs if possible to make it fit the doors. Some heavy furniture like large armorers and really big couches may have to go through the windows if the don’t fit the doors. Make sure you have plenty of rope for situations like that.

Heavy kitchen items, such as fridge freezers, dishwashers and washing machines, will slide much easier on the vinyl floor if you spray a little washing-up liquid on the floor first.

Moving Heavy Items Through the Stairs

To get some heavy items down the stairs, you can use two boards as a ramp. Make sure there are at least two friends to help you if you decide to so that. Another option is to lay the object on a quilt or heavy blanket; control the descent with your shoulder as you back down, lifting the leading edge of the ‘skid’ slightly with both hands.

Moving Plasma or Big LCD TVs

Get enough blankets and/or furniture pads, which can be purchased from a moving company or truck rental agency, to cover and protect the TV set entirety. If you have the original box of your TV, it is best to use it for the move, if not, cover your TV with furniture pad and wrap the TV very carefully. Do not move your TV by yourself. Some plasma TV’s are very large but not that heavy and you may think that you can be able to handle the moving job all by yourself. Call a friend to help you, it would be much easier for you and safer for the TV.

That’s for now. Stay tuned for more helpful moving tips on TheMovingBlog.com

Five quick steps and guide on choosing a Houston Moving Company – what questions to ask and what things to pay attention to.

Are your Houston Movers real Professionals

You can tell very quickly if the mover you are dealing with is professional or not. Just visit the web site of the moving company that you are about to hire and you will be able to tell how much you can trust that mover. If a mover can’t spent a little for a good website, what can you expect from that mover in future, not much. See if they have their office address listed as well as contact information like a toll free number.

How long have your mover have been in business?

Companies who have bad reputation don’t last long in the moving business. So if a moving company has been doing moving services in Houston for a long period of time you can be sure that this moving company is providing quality moving services.

Are your Houston Movers Licensed and Insured

Your Houston mover has to be fully licensed and insured. You don’t want to deal with an unlicensed moving company. If the mover you hire is not licensed and insured, then you may end up with a broken TV that you need to pay from your own money or even end up paying twice or triple the price you was quoted upon. Ask your Houston moving company for their Department of Transportation number (DOT Number) and check this number in the Department of Transportation website. Check also with your local Better Business Bureau office if they are any complaints against your mover.

Get a free moving estimate and a written estimate

We all know that a vital part of choosing a Houston moving company is the price that we will have to pay for the moving services we require. Because of that, different moving companies often provide quotes that are not completely accurate. What you need to do is request a written moving estimate for the moving service you require covering the total amount of the move. Ask if the moving company can do a visual moving estimate on site. This is the best way for the professional Houston movers to provide you with an accurate moving cost estimate.

Read Houston moving reviews

Does your Houston mover have good moving reviews? Go online and research for moving reviews. It is always a good idea to be prepared before booking with the company. There are many online resources for mover reviews, complaints and testimonials you can check before actually paying the moving deposit. That way you will be able to determine which Houston movers are reliable and which will involve you in a moving scam scheme.

Moving expensive electronics is always a challenge. If you have spent years collecting expensive stereo components you will need to make sure that they are transported and packed safely and secured.

If you are a professional singer, you can hire movers specialized in transporting electronics and studio equipment. The cost of this service is significantly higher than hiring a regular moving company. In this guide we will help you plan and execute the move by yourself and save on your moving costs.

Moving Electronic Equipment

The first thing that you should do, is to check if you have any packing or moving instructions in the manual that comes with the device provided by the product manufacturer. If there are any packing or moving tips that are recommended or suggested by the manufacturer, then you should follow them closely. The product manufacturer knows best about what it takes to protect the product from damages when moved. Some expensive electronics should be configured for transportation mode to prevent internal damages while moving.

If you have enough storage space in your home, save the original boxes and packing materials of your electronics. They are specially made to protect your device, plus if you have the original box and packing materials that comes with your device, you will avoid the exhausting search for the proper packing materials to fit your device. If you are transporting an expensive TV and you don’t have the original box, buying one for your move will cost you about $150. Some professional moving companies offer renting a special moving box for around $70 during the move.

If the original packing is not available or if it is damaged, then you need to buy some professional packing materials. Start with these essentials: sturdy cartons, newsprint for wrapping things up, tape, scissors and felt tip markers to number and label each box. Ask your moving company to provide to you packing materials, but check their prices in advance. Sometimes it is cheaper to buy your moving boxes from the nearest Uhaul location.

When you disassemble electronics such as computers, stereos and other devices that have numerous cords, place small colored stickers on the end of each cord and the same color sticker where the cord connects to the device. This will save you a lot of time reading the installation instructions. Also if you don’t connect your devices properly you can damage them. Even if you have a warranty for the device, it is certain that you don’t need any additional stress of finding and dealing with the device manufacturer to cover your warranty.

To protect your electronics, you need to cover them with moving pads or light blankets, also seal the moving boxes with packing tape to keep the dust out. To secure your electronics further you can use bubble wrap, paper padding or Styrofoam peanuts.

Don’t forget to back up all software that comes with you electronics. Computes require specific software to run properly.

Finally, complete a full list of all electronic components and computer equipment (with serial numbers) prior to moving them. Submit that list to your homeowner’s insurance company.

The most obvious solution when moving expensive electronics is to hire a professional moving company that is fully licensed, insured and have a good overall reputation. Unfortunately that’s not always possible because of the costs, so sometimes you may need to do the packing all by yourself.

Here at The Moving Blog, we have numerous articles about the things we should do when moving. Now almost everyone knows the regular moving tips: Always research the mover, read moving reviews for your moving company, always hire a mover that is fully licensed and insured etc. But we often forget to do a couple of simple things that will make our move a lot more stress free. To help with your future move, we are going to define a couple of important moving tips we need to do, but we often forget to.

Prepare a backpack. Put the things that you will use during the move in a backpack. It’s not enough just to put them in your luggage. There are important things that you need to access fast when you are in a hurry. A first aid kit, all necessary documents, two bottles of water and clothing should be put together in one place in your backpack, not separated in a couple of different cases.

Gather all of your records together. Your medical, dental, yours and your children’s school records are very important. You need to make sure you got all at one place. Some schools accept only original documents, so copies will not do. Try to find all of your original records and gather them at one place. God forbid something happens to you before you find a new family doctor. But if you have your medical records on hand can alleviate this problem.

Old phone books. Don’t forget to take all of your phone books with you. There is a great chance to loose them if you pack them with the move itself in one of the many moving boxes.

Dry cleaning. Remember to pick up your dry cleaning. Also if you have left something for repair you need to pick it up before the move.

Garage doors. It is something that we often forget when moving. Get the garage door opener key or card out of your car.

Bank accounts. If you are moving out of town or out of state, you need to set up a bank account ahead of time. Some banks put a hold on out of town checks and that is always a problem when you need to pay bills at your new place. Also some merchants won’t accept your out of town checks.

Being prepared and organized during your move is very important. Did we miss something important? Let us know in the comments and we will include your ideas in the post.

So, it is time to move and you need some help with your precious paintings. Don’t worry, we are here to help you as always. When you move valuable paintings you should make decision whether you are hiring a professional and experiences moving company to handle your paintings, or you are doing it by yourself. If you decide to handle your paintings yourself, follow our tips to manage easily your moving valuable paintings job.

Firstly, if the painting you want to move is traditional oil on canvas, you need to be sure that the painting is completely dry before the moving process begin. It could take up to 6 months for a painting to really dry up. When you are sure that the painting you want to move is dry, you can start packing the painting.

Buy appropriate reliable packing supplies – these include sturdy boxes of varying sizes, packing tape bubble wrap.

After you buy all the packing supplies you need, start packing each painting individually.

If your painting is framed with glass, put tape across the front of the painting like an X, so even the glass got broken your painting will be protected from damage.

Wrap each painting with non printed newsprint and then with bubble wrap. Don’t worry if you overdo the wrapping. It is a better idea to leave the painting with the frame; it is very difficult, even for an expert to put the painting back in the frame again.

After you are done with the bubble wrap, tape cardboard around your painting and place it in a flat fitted picture box.

It may sound you silly, but don’t forget to label all picture boxes with “FRAGILE”.

Finally, take care when loading your artworks. Take in mind, especially if you are performing a long distance move, that valuables such as paintings may need special conditions during transportation.

However, if your paintings are quite expensive, you should hire a professional moving company to deal with the moving process. Hiring an experienced moving company to pack, transport and unpack your precious art can ensure that it will arrive intact. A professional moving company will photograph all of your paintings and they will be fully insured, so even if the worst thing happens, you will be well compensated. It is all up to you.

The holidays are knocking on the door and it’s time to pack. You need to be well organized and prepared for your holiday. You definitely don’t want to arrive at your holiday destination and discover that you have forgotten something important, that could really ruin your holiday.
To help you with the holiday packing, we offer few important steps that could be very helpful for your holiday packing.

Make a list with all the items for packing

Before you start packing for your holiday, think about the things you are taking and make a list. Take into consideration sport activities you will do, weather conditions, and off course the time duration in order to determine how much clothes you will need. When you are done with packing clothes, make sure that you take all the necessary toiletry with you. Also, take with you a first aid kit; there are plenty of good travel first aid kits and if you don’t have, you can purchase one.

Put your packing list on a visible place

Every time you think of something you might need on your holiday, just write it on the packing list. You may make changes all the time. Remove stuff, or adding new belongings, keep your list up-to-date all the time. As your plans may change, note every alteration on the list. You may put your list on the fridge, or you can make a note in your phone, or computer. Choose what is the more comfortable option for you and you will enjoy great results at the end.

Start packing early

As we always suggest, start packing early. If you start packing the night before you leave, it is almost certain that you will forget something important to take with you. Packing is always time consuming and quite annoying. We usually put off tedious work for the last moment and thus we are never satisfied with the consequences. Take enough time to organize your packing. This way you will save a lot of troubles.

Finally when you are done with the packing, be sure that you leave some room in your suitcase. One of the best things for holidays is to buy gifts for family and friends.

Packing before moving

Moving is quite a stressful job. One of the tiring and time consuming steps during relocation is packing. You have to pack all your household items and personal belongings. You are busy at work and you have to do many jobs at a time, so you are running on a tight schedule. Making a list will help you organize your time better and finish every job in time. Arrange a list for your packing job and enjoy your cool moving.

After the movers load all your stuff on the moving van, usually what is left is a mess and has to be cleaned in order to take your security deposit, in case you are a tenant, or to sell your house. As usual, a clean and tidied house costs more than a dirty one, so if you want to get more money and make your house easier to sell, you have to leave your house or apartment spotless. Of course, it’s quite a tedious and annoying housework, but it has to be done. So, while organizing your moving, take into consideration the cleaning job. It may seem you as an easy task, but it is at least a time consuming one.

This time we are providing you with helpful tips about cleaning after you move out. As we already agreed cleaning takes a lot of time, so make sure you have plenty of it.

Cleaning after movers by yourself

Here is a list of steps that will ease your cleaning job in case you decide to clear up the mess by yourself.

After you have loaded all your belongings, throw away all the rubbish. There will be left-overs of packing materials for example, or other stuff that has to be cleared. Get rid of all that rubbish before start cleaning.

Buy the proper cleaning detergents. These days the market offer many different cleaning agents – from the all-purpose (abrasive and non-abrasive) cleaning products to the bleaches and the disinfectants. Buy only high quality products, otherwise you are risking to spend your money without achieving the desired results. Of course, money matters, but don’t go for the cheapest, ask for recommendations friends, colleagues, or even the sale representative.

Start with wardrobes, drawers, kitchen appliance etc. After you have equipped yourself with the right cleaning products, start with the furniture (if you have left any). Clear up every household item with the suitable cleaning product. For example, kitchen appliances requires cleaning agents that remove greasy stains and dirt, while bathtubs and sinks need cleaning products that cope with mold and chalk. All items have to be left spotless. Do not forget to vacuum the carpets and wash the curtains and the drapes. These are usually forgotten. Clean everything room by room. Do not just clean randomly from to room. This way you will waste much time.

Next, clean all the floors, walls, windows and doors. Again, use the proper detergents. Leave everything stainless, safe troubles with your householder. Polish everything to the very best. Bear in mind that if you have any wood floors, you have to use wood-friendly cleaning product. Otherwise, severe damages may occur.

Take care for the outdoor area. If you have yard or small garden, leave it in good condition. Throw away the garbage. You may consider to sweep away any leaves or other junk.

Choosing Professional Cleaning Services

If you don’t have enough time to do the cleaning by yourself, you may consider hiring a professional cleaning company. Using professional cleaning services has its pros and cons. You have to pay a cleaning company after you have already spend pretty money on booking your movers, but you will save a lot of time. Cleaning companies offer cleaning services such as domestic cleaning and office cleaning services, and even specific services to meet some particular requirements – like the after builders cleaning services. A professional cleaning company will clear up the mess in no time. Everything will be stainless and polished perfectly.

How to find a reliable cleaning company

Choosing a reliable cleaning company that you can trust is quite a job. Here are some tips that will make it easier for you to find a professional cleaning company.

Make a list of 5-6 different cleaning companies. Search in Google, or ask friends and colleagues to recommend you.

It’s a good idea to run a check at the BBB (Better Business Bureau) website. Since BBB has quite high standards to accredit businesses, find out if your potential cleaning company has a good reputation.

Also, search for cleaning related forums and blogs. Read some customer reviews for these companies and select 2-3 companies. The more reviews you read, the better chances for hiring a good cleaning company you have.

Call the cleaning companies and ask for a cleaning quote. Compare the quotes and make your choice. Be careful and do go for the cheapest one. You may be dealing with unprofessional and rogue cleaning company, or there might be hidden charges. So, be reasonable when choosing cleaning services.

Arrange the payment in advance. Make it all clear. Ask the particular company about rates. Some moving companies prefer to be paid by hour, and others offer per-room rates.

Choosing professional cleaning services might save you a lot of time and troubles. As cleaning for these companies is an everyday job, they can handle the job faster and better. Remember, by all means book a licensed and insured cleaning company.

Going to college is an important event in every young adult life. Meeting new people and changing your home is always a stressful experience. This time we will provide you with moving-to-college tips. Let’s make the whole moving-to-college experience more enjoyable. If you manage to organize your time well, then everything will go naturally.

Check the best time for moving

In most colleges there are specific time periods that are very popular for moving, for example: mod-morning. At these time frames it might be much more difficult to find available parking space to unload your belongings. You have to remember that at least five hundred other students and their parents are looking for that perfect parking spot, right beside the dorm. It’s really a good idea to park your car the night before the move and arrive on the moving campus as soon as possible.

Create a moving schedule

Your moving will be much less stressful if you coordinate your moving with your future roommates. If you and your future roommates are moving at the same day, everything could turn into a big mess. Be sure to coordinate your moving schedule with your roommates. Even if you have a little storage space at your new home, you will be able to use it wisely. Also, you can help your roommates with the unpacking to shorten the process.

Arrange Specific Moving task for everyone who is involved in the moving

To optimize the moving process you need to ensure that everyone who is involved in the moving is occupied with his/her task. It’s often helpful to assign different tasks to everyone who is helping with your college move. Check twice the arrangements. It may turn out that someone will be busy for the move. You have to be 100% sure that everyone will be able to help with his/her task.

Ask your roommates for help or call friends to help with the move

Ask your roommates or friends to help with the move unless you are using a moving company services. Be aware that some dorms don’t have elevators. So, it would be really hard for you to move all your heavy belongings. To make your moving a little bit more easy, have someone help you with the job. It’s a good idea to help each other with your future roommates, but that’s not always possible. So the next best thing is to get some help from friends.

Reserve moving carts

Last, but not least, if possible reserve a moving cart. Many colleges are offering moving carts for students when they move. But during moving days it’s really difficult to find one. So it’s really important to reserve a cart before your college move time begins. Get yourself a cart a soon as possible.

Moving to a college is a really big and important step in everyone’s life. It’s really frustrating to know that you wouldn’t see your family and friends for a long time, and worrying for the moving can make the whole situation even more difficult. So, take a deep breath and follow these simple college moving tips. You will cope with the moving job fast and easy.

Top 8 Tips for student moving

Student moving

You are a student and you have to move, but you don’t have enough time. You have your finals coming and you are already quite stressed. We offer you some key tips to pay attention at. These will help you to cope with the annoying job much more faster.

Student moving has its own unique specifics. If you are moving for the summer, you definitely need to find a summer storage facility for your belongings. This can be a bit stressful when you are rushed to do a couple of things at once. So you need to be well organized and prepared.

Here are some tips that will help you with your student move.

1. Use a moving checklist. Making a checklist will help you to organize your time better. When you are running on a tight schedule it is very important not to miss anything.
Make yourself a checklist in which you describe in details everything that needs to be done before, and after, your move. Put a time frame for every single job and then follow it precisely.

2. Leave any unnecessary items. Avoid moving anything that you don’t really need. Give items you don’t need to a friend or sell them, but avoid moving them if they are useless. Probably if you don’t need them now, you most likely won’t use them later either. Plus, if you have some old clothes or books you can give them to charity. This way you will save a lot of your valuable time and most importantly, you will do something good.

3. Get some help from you friends. Your move will be a lot faster and easier if your friends help you with the packing. Ask some close friends and colleagues if they give you hand. Your moving may turn into a pleasant teamwork. The more help you get, the better results you will achieve.

4. Packing Supplies. Get proper packing supplies from your mover. Most of the movers offer packing supplies at additional cost, but get the proper packing supplies. Yes, it will cost extra, but you will have the proper boxes and supplies and you will save a lot of time and further troubles. Take good care of all your belongings. The most important is to transport them safely.

5. Pack your belongings room by room. Room by room. Pack on a room-by-room basis will eliminate a confusion and save a lot of time when you’re unpacking. When you have to pack yourself everything packing room by room will significantly ease the whole job. Start with belongings that you use rarely and leave the most often used items for last.

6. Use the A-B-C system. You don’t need to unpack everything right away after you have moved, so it’s a good idea to use the a-b-c system to label your moving boxes. Simply write “a” on the boxes that you need to unpack immediately after you’ve moved and “c” on the boxes that can wait. Using that simple system will help you to unpack much quickly after you have moved to your new apartment or house.

7.Label you boxes carefully. It’s essential to label all of your boxes the right way. Be sure to write on each box what exactly you have put in it. It will be quite hard for you to find out everything when you have 50 boxes that look like pretty much the same. Felt pens are superb solution for labeling boxes. Write information such as their contents, destination room, fragile or this side up. It is a good idea to make a master list, so you’ll know what is in each box.

8. Start packing early. Of course the best way to avoid problems and stress is to start packing early. Moving is a very stressful time, so start packing two or three weeks earlier if you can.

Think over your plan again. Before you start packing revise your plan with everyone who is involved. This will help with your packing and will ensure that things will run smoothly.

Choosing a long distance mover is quite different from just picking a mover for your local move. You need to take so many things into consideration and if you don’t know what you are looking for, then choosing a long distance mover could be quite a challenge. Your future movers must be well acquainted with the both locations

As we always suggest, the first thing you should do when looking for a long distance mover or any kind of mover, is to take time and do some research about your potential movers. Find out who you are dealing with. Moving safely long distance is a top priority.

Choose only Licensed and Insured Long Distance Movers

Find out if the long distance movers you have came up to are registered and licensed. You just have to run a check on the US DOT number of the moving company at the U.S. Department of Transportation website. Every licensed mover is obliged to follow the U.S. Department of Transportation safety rules.

Choose a Reputable Long Distance Mover

After you have a short list of registered relocating companies it is a good idea to run a check on your potential movers at the Better Business Bureau site. Find out what the business say about your future long distance mover. Also, it might be a good idea to read some moving related reviews. There are a lot of forums and blogs where customers share their opinion about moving services.

Insurance options

When choosing the right long distance mover for you, research very well the insurance options. Make sure that the insurance is valid in both locations. Make it clear that your belongings will be well insured during the whole long distance trip.

Before booking a long distance mover ask at least three different moving companies for estimate quotes. Be careful and do not rush for the cheapest. You may be dealing with unprofessional movers who may even surprise you with hidden charges. Take time and find a loyal relocating company that provides long distance moving services at reasonable prices. Once you make a choice there’s no coming back. Be sure that your movers are experts on long distance trips.
